Q & A with Maitreyi Raman author of The Complete Prebiotic & Probiotic Health Guide:

1. How would you sum up The Complete Prebiotic & Probiotic Health Guide in one sentence?
This book provides highly novel insight into the mechanisms of action through which diet and impact health and disease, and provides a healthful living guide based in cutting edge science.
2.  What do you most want people to learn/take away from this book?

I would like people to recognize that fiber intake in the North American diet is quite low, and that by optimizing fiber intake, many chronic disease may be mitigated. Additionally, the intake of processed and refined food may contribute to chronic diseases through impact on the microbiome.

3. What would your top five tips be for someone just starting to balance their gut flora with prebiotics/probiotics?
This is a great question, as the proposed concepts may seem daunting not to mention overwhelming to someone who is looking for a dietary overhaul. I would stress the importance of starting with dietary charting and maintaining food records to assess the current state. Then, attention to increasing fiber from fruit, vegetables and whole grains would be valuable. Introduction of fermented foods, such as yogurt and kefir would be the next step to round out the process.
