When it Rains it Pours!

Good Day,

A few months ago, my Nikon D50 camera wore out and refused to take pictures. It had been in the shop at least three times in the past years. My sweetie pie decided he would buy me a new one from Sam's Club. And a day or so later our six year old Kenmore refrigerator failed to make ice and then failed to keep our food cool enough. And, we scrapped together money and got a new refrigerator from our local Lowes. It is doing great! And the day before Thanksgiving, I accidentally knocked my coffee cup over onto my laptop keyboard. It was sitting on another table next to my laptop. My hand simple jerked and topped it over. I performed the Wikipedia trick for drying a keyboard. Sadly, it did not work. I am currently without my computer and typing this to you on my husbands. lol

Despite all these mishaps, we had a wonderful Thanksgiving. We are blessed.

Thank you,
Janet Coffield

Holiday Gift Guide: THE AMERICAN PLATE: A CULINARY HISTORY IN 100 BITES, a Entertaining Fact-and-Recipe-Filled Buffet of American Food History, Should Be on Every Foodie and History-Lovers Gift List!

"The American Plate is a true masterclass in American history
through a food lens. A must read!"
-- Chef Carla Hall

"The American Plate is an engagingly readable history of American food. It takes us from pemmican to microwave popcorn, from lunch pails to oysters Rockefeller. It's one of those agreeable books that works just as well if you dive in at random or read every bite in sequence; either way, it is full of treats.  Libby O'Connell imparts a great deal of information about changing American foodways with humor and pithiness. She considers such questions as how beavertail and eel - once popular American delicacies - didn't pass the test of time, while maple syrup and blueberries are still enjoyed, just as they were by American Indians. Oh, and read on to find out the secret ingredient in Brunswick stew."
-- Bee Wilson, author of Consider the Fork:
A History of How we Cook and Eat

"The American Plate shows that food is interesting not just because it tastes good, but because it reflects the people who grow, cook, and eat it.... a buffet of information that revels in the incredible diversity of
American cuisine."
-- Michael Stern, co-author of the bestselling Roadfood series

The American Plate by Libby H. O'Connell

Every food has a story.

But how much do Americans really know about the foods they consume?

For generations, people have proudly defined themselves and their values through their national cuisine. American food, like its history, is a world of its own.  THE AMERICAN PLATE: A CULINARY HISTORY IN 100 BITES is an enticingly fresh book from Dr. Libby H. O'Connell, the chief historian of the History Channel, introduces modern readers to lost American food traditions and leads them on a tantalizing culinary journey through the evolution of our vibrant cuisine and culture. Covering a hundred different foods from the Native American-era through today and featuring over a dozen recipes and photos, this fascinating history of American food will delight history buffs and food lovers alike.

Tracing the history of the United States through a series of 100 iconic dishes and delicacies (or bites), O'Connell offers a unique multilayered overview of the American people and the transformation of their palates. Delicious recipes, menus, photos, and fun historical tidbits are sprinkled throughout: from why politicians incorporate barbecue feats into their campaign tactics to the real reason Americans call a dollar a "buck" and why takeout is not the modern convenience you thought it was!

Each chapter and each "bite" stands alone, so it can be read from front to back or just pick a time or food that interests you. It can inspire meals for traditional holidays or observances. Ranging from unusual delicacies like roasted beaver tail to traditional meatloaf, and social edibles like beer and pretzels, O'Connell explores how different cultures and their traditions have shaped our national diet, influenced the foods we eat and cook today; and the indelible footprint they've left on the foods we savor.

 RED CROSS WAR CAKE

The American Red Cross promoted this cake recipe, promising that the end

product could reach the western front and retain its freshness. The dried fruit

helps keep it moist if it has to be shipped across the Atlantic. Try soaking the

raisins in rum for a few days or a week before you make the cake. Your dough-
boy will thank you.

The original recipe comes with a recommendation: “Cake keeps fresh for

a long time and can be sent to men at the front.” 23

ingredients

  •  2 cups brown sugar
  •  2 cups hot water
  •  8 ounces raisins (about 1 package), chopped
  •  2 tablespoons lard
  •  1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  •  1 teaspoon cloves
  •  1 teaspoon salt
  •  3 cups all-purpose flour
  •  1 teaspoon baking soda

directions

Put sugar, hot water, raisins, lard, cinnamon, cloves, and salt in a large pot.

Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring frequently, then reduce the heat

to medium low and cook at a low boil for 5 minutes. Remove from heat

and cool. Preheat oven to 350°F. Stir in flour and baking soda. Mix well.

Grease 2 mini- loaf pans.

Pour batter into the pans and bake for 45 minutes.

I received a complimentary copy of Nature Girl: A Guide to Caring for God's Creation written by the mother and daughter team of Karen Whiting and Rebecca White.

Nature Girl: A Guide to Caring for God's Creation is an Eco-friendly guide written from a Christian perspective that is recommended for pre-teen and tween girls. It features a Green List which shares ideas for going green in an A-to-Z listing followed by chapter related topics. Nature Girl is both educational and fun! It is crammed full of both indoor and outdoor activities, crafts,  games, fun facts, science experiments, recipes, quizzes and so much more. There are ten chapters and included in each are various Bible scriptures(NIV), quotes from tween girls,  interviews and more.

As a home-school parent, I want my children to develop a respect and appreciation for all of God's creation. (Genesis 1:31) I  selected Nature Girl to review because I am in agreement that we must teach our children to love and respect our world. I plan on including Nature Girl: A Guide to Caring for God's Creation as as part of our supplemental home-school science curriculum. My youngest daughter loves cooking, crafts and the outdoors. What a wonderful way to teach her about conservation,  environmental issues and most importantly becoming better stewards for God's creation!  I think they should create a Nature Boy, too.

Being a "green girl" for God means more than just caring for our planet. It also means appreciating God's creations and understanding our responsibility in caring for the earth. Each chapter covers different topics like water, air, energy, recycling, and renewing the earth, and includes crafts, Scripture verses, games, quizzes, interviews with real people and quotes from real girls. The book also contains science-based activities, career ideas, plus resources for more information.

Goodshop Sunday - Shop & Feel Good at the Same Time

Look Out Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Here Comes Goodshop Sunday!
Goodshop Sunday (November 30th) is the New Day to Save Money on Holiday Shopping and Earn Donations for a Cause at the Same Time
18th November, San Francisco, CA - There’s Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but where’s the holiday spirit? Goodshop Sunday (November 30th) is the day where thousands of merchants will be offering great deals and coupons AND donating a percentage of nearly every purchase back to the shopper’s favorite nonprofit or school!
Nearly 70% of online shoppers say they feel at least a little guilty that they are not donating more of the money they use to shop for gifts*. On Goodshop Sunday, feel guilty no more!
Leading up to the day, thousands of stores (including AmazonOld Navy, Target, and Kohl's) will have the best coupons and deals listed on Goodshop.com and will donate a percentage of nearly every purchase to the users’ favorite cause – for free!  In addition, on Goodshop Sunday, select retailers are offering double donations, while others are sharing exclusive deals-- so people can feel extra good about their holiday shopping!
Passionate cause supporters nationwide are taking the #GoodshopSunday pledge - to buy 1 gift that gives back this holiday season - and spreading the word to get their friends to do the same. Photos of people forming the “hand heart” are being shared across social media-- acting as the visual confirmation of their pledge and the promise that holiday shopping can make a difference.

The impact of buying just 1 gift that gives back can be significant. “According to the National Retail Federation, Americans will spend over $100 billion online on holiday shopping this year,” said Scott Garell, Goodshop CEO. With an average of 3% of our sales going to nonprofits and schools, Goodshoppers have the potential to help raise $3 billion for causes in need!”

“This is simply a no brainer,” said Goodshopper, Lisa Grander. “I always feel like I wish I could do more to help Best Friends Animal Society during the holidays -- now with every gift I buy, I can!  And, I can save money at the same time too.”

More than 110,000 causes are participating and it’s up to the shopper to select who they want to support. To bring that home – if you support the ASPCA, one sweater would raise enough to get two dogs adopted into loving homes.  If you support UNICEF, your purchase of an Xbox  could donate enough to provide therapeutic milk to fourteen malnourished children.  To date, Goodshop has raised more than $11 million for causes.

Plus, while there will be special deals on Goodshop Sunday, shoppers can find deals and donations all year long. Goodshop helps shoppers save more than just money!

New App from Penguin Random House: Bible Verses By Heart

Bible Verses by Heart App

Penguin, creators of the popular “Poems by Heart” app, launches “Bible Verses by Heart”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—Nov 18, 2014: The Bible is the most important book for millions of Christians around the world, but it’s also a classic work of literature. Now, Penguin Random House is proud to launch Bible Verses by Heart, an app that will appeal not only to the faithful, but to those who view the Bible as literature and want to better understand the extent to which the “Good Book” permeates our culture and values.

Inspired by the successful Poems by Heart from Penguin Classics app—which has more than 30,000 active users a month, has been downloaded over 412,000 times, and is one of only six educational apps recognized as an “App Store Best of 2013”Bible Verses By Heart is a beautiful, intuitive app designed to help readers memorize key passages from the Bible. Joel Fotinos, a licensed minister and the publisher of Tarcher Books, a Penguin Random House imprint, was hugely influential in determining the app’s 20 passages, which were gathered from the Old Testament, the New Testament, as well as Psalms and Proverbs.

“We wanted Bible Verses by Heart to appeal not only to people who love the Bible and want to memorize key scriptures, but also to casual readers interested in knowing more about it—i.e., those who see the Bible referenced in literature, the news, and in popular culture, and would like a better understanding of the Bible’s verses, selections, and stories,” said Fotinos. “We narrowed down the selections to what I jokingly call “The Bible’s Greatest Hits” – meaning those passages that would have the greatest recognition and that fit within the guidelines we had set.”
Fotinos then ran the passages by a tough set of critics—a pair of nuns from a well-known Christian monastic community. The result: a collection that draws from five different translations and encompasses everything from 1 Corinthians 13:1-13 and Genesis 1:1-2:3 to Psalm 40:1-17 (A Prayer for Help) and Judges 5:1-31 (Song of Deborah).

“Since these are poetic selections, we weren’t trying to create a ‘Cliff’s Notes’ version.  Nor did we want to choose only inspiring verses,” said Fotinos. “Rather, we picked selections that would add to a person’s Bible literacy.  When someone memorizes these passages, they gain a greater appreciation of how pervasive these verses are in our culture.  Eventually we hope to record and include more selections from the Bible to keep this project expanding and evolving.”

Bible Verses By Heart is free to download, and comes with three free passages, with 21 more available for in-app purchase. As users progress through five stages of difficulty, they are rewarded with high scores and Game Center Achievements. They also have the ability to record and share their own recitals via email and SoundCloud. The app was designed and developed by inkle, who also designed Poems by Heart from Penguin Classics.
The Bible Verses By Heart app is available for download for iPhone or iPad via iTunes. Click to read more about the Bible Verses by Heart app on iTunes:
