Book Review: Personalized Love Letters from God for Children

Love Letters from God - Zonderkidz
by Glenys Nellist SRV$16.99

Love Letters from God
by Glenys Nellist and Illustrated by Sophie Allsopp

ISBN: 9780310733843
Zonderkidz - Hardcover - 40 pp
SRV $16.99 - English
Juvenille Nonfiction/Religious/Bible Stories
Published: August 26, 2014

Did you know that the Bible is God's 'love letter' to us? It's a FACT! And, "Love Letters from God" by Glenys Nellist elaborates on this topic by featuring a beautifully illustrated Bible storybook just for kids ages 4 to 8.  Love Letters from God  features nine Old Testament stories and nine New Testament stories from the Bible. Each  story ends with a special Bible verse promise and a unique lift-the-flap letter. Every envelope is addressed as,  "Your Love Letter from God" and is specially designed to correspond with each Bible story from the inside and out; including the postage stamp.  It begins with the heading and a blank space to personalize their own name. At the end of the book, your child is prompted with a special invitation to join, Jesus' team and a letter is provided for their personalized reply.

I like that Love Letters from God offers children the opportunity to become more intimate with God in order to encourage a close relationship with him at such a early age in their lives. The personalization of each letter offers encouragement and makes the child feel special. What a wonderful memory keepsake for both parent and child!

Also, I believe the age range should be more flexible with this particular storybook! My nine year old had no problem reading  it aloud to me. I believe she actually blushed when she was prompted to include her name in the first, Love Letter from God

Love Letters from God by Glenys Nellist is available in hardcover, sold at retailers online and nationwide for $16.99.

ISBN: 9780778802457
Price (USD):$24.95(CAN) $27.95
Number of Pages: 696/ 7"x10"/Index
Publisher: Robert Rose, Inc.

The Food Substitutions Bible 2nd Edition by David Joachim Culinary traditions have changed immensely from the time I was a small child. I recall many times when I was visiting my grandmother that she would send my cousin, Ronnie to the woods to set his rickety trap in order to catch an unsuspecting gray squirrel or rabbit as they nibbled vegetation beneath a small bush or shrub. He would bag it and then bring it home to my grandmother to clean and skin for their supper. She remarked that it tasted just like chicken - finger licking good!

I never witnessed the skinning or cleaning of the gray squirrels or rabbits but I did attend as she helped our family prepare our large coop of chickens for the freezer one year. I am a bit fuzzy on the actual season but it is one memory that I will never forget.

Is your mouth watering for fried squirrel or rabbit, now? Well, you could substitute another meat for the common gray squirrel. Let's check out the new kitchen resource book, The Food Substitutions Bible, Second Edition by David Joachim. From A1 to Zwieback there are 6,500   substitutions for ingredients, equipment and techniques. As I browse the alphabetized entries, I locate the word squirrel. Included is a bit of history specifically featuring the common gray squirrel as presented in the reprinted 1962 cookbook, The Joy of Cooking published by the Bobbs-Merrill Company; which shared recipes and step-by-step instructions for skinning and cleaning a squirrel. If squirrel is not your cup of tea, then you could one of these substitutes: a rabbit(more tender meat), hare(pinker meat) or chicken(lighter, more tender meat).

  • How To Use this Book
  • A - Z Substitutions
  • Measurement Equivalent Charts
  • Ingredient Guides
  • Recipes(50 new recipes)

The Food Substitutions Bible, Second Edition by David Joachim is awesome.  I highly recommend it as a great gift idea for newly wed couples, a housewarming shower, college bound students, the local firehouse, organic farmers, hunting lodges, home, school, church libraries and more.

DAVID JOACHIM has written, edited or collaborated on more than 40 cookbooks. He is a bestselling and award-winning author.  The Science of Good Food, which he co-authored with Andrew Schloss, was nominated for a James Beard Award and the first edition of  The Food Substitutions Bible won the prestigious International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP) Award.

Got pain? Push aside over-the-counter analgesic pills, a healthier solution for pain management awaits with topical analgesic products in the form of creams, gels, sprays and patches.

SALONPAS® products

The American Academy of Pain Medicine reports that “pain affects more Americans than diabetes, heart disease and cancer combined” which is costing the nation at least $558 billion a year in medical bills, sick days and lost productivity.  Topical analgesic pain relief – as found in patches, creams, gels and sprays – is gaining greater market recognition.
“When people self-medicate with over-the-counter oral pain pills, they can ingest inappropriate doses and run the risk of potential drug interactions, which can lead to unintended or unsuspected dangerous side effects, some of which can be as serious as liver failure or heart damage,” says Dr. Sylvia Hesse, a New York based orthopedic medicine specialist.  “By relying on topical analgesic gels, sprays and patches for pain relief - without the use of pills - you can be assured of making a safer choice.”

Salonpas Deep Relieving Gel

Pam Shriver, a Hall of Fame tennis star, ESPN broadcaster and single mother of three prefers external pain management versus popping pills.  “I’ve been very active my whole life and believe that keeping active into your forties, fifties and beyond is critically important to ensure a happy and healthy life,” says Shriver who is a 22-time Grand Slam Title holder.  “Trying to balance being a mother, broadcaster and recreational athlete, can trigger pain in my lower back and shoulder.  I rely on Salonpas Deep Relieving Gel for targeted, penetrating relief.”

Recipe: Boberry Biscuits

Boberry Biscuits

All week long, I had planned to bake a batch of blueberry biscuits similar to the ones I like from Bojangles. Today, I decided it was time to heat the oven and get my "bake-on!" I found several recipes from surfing online and I tweaked them to make the Boberry Biscuits featured in the photo above. I plan on making my own biscuit mix the next time. If you are strapped for time then using Bisquick is a good alternative.

Boberry Biscuits

Biscuit Recipe:
  • 2 cups Bisquick mix(Add more or use Self-rising flour if dough is sticky)
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 3 Tbsp. Sugar
  • Blueberries(fresh or frozen; crushed)

Glaze Ingredients:
  • 1 cup Powdered Sugar
  • 1/8 cup Milk
  • 1 tsp. Vanilla Extract
  • 1/2 tsp. lemon juice (optional)

Tip Off: Bojangles does not make their biscuits with real blueberries, those are actual blueberry pellets.

After mixing the biscuit batter, gently fold in the clean, crushed blueberries. Pour the batter onto a lightly floured cutting board or table surface. Use a rolling pin to make 1/2" thick biscuits with a 2 1/2" biscuit cutter. Bake the biscuits according to Bisquick package.

Add melted butter once the plump blueberry biscuits have cooled. Then, mix the glaze ingredients together until smooth. Drizzle yummy glazed icing over each biscuit. Eat! Enjoy!

Options: If you do not have a biscuit cutter, try a cup or glass. A recycled clean can with both ends removed will do just great!

Pre-heat oven 450 F.
Servings: 9 to 12

Wordless Wednesday: Woodworking & Wreath Making

Wordless Wednesday: Hobbies
(Not exactly, wordless)

Woodworking Hobby - Carl builds a LECTERN.

My dear husband, Carl is an electrician by trade. In his spare time he enjoys working with wood. He has made many wooden boxes in various shapes and size, lecterns, hope chests, shelves and more.

Wreath Making - Grapevine & Burlap Ribbon by LHD

At Pick Your Plum, they sell metal house numbers that you can personalize with the letter of your choice. I created this simple grapevine wreath to display for all seasons on our front door. I purchased the burlap ribbon and grapevine wreath from Carolina Pottery in North Carolina. I decided not to use glue to attach the burlap ribbon. I simply wrapped it around the form and threaded it through the house numbers located on the letter "C" to hold it in place securely.  I can change the ribbon for any season and add other embellishments. It currently hangs on my living wall.

Did you know that infants, pregnant woman and older people are at risk for GERD, too? It happens usually before the age of 30, and  happens more often in women than men.

I received a complimentary copy of   The pH Balance Health & Diet Guide for GERD, IBS & IBD  by authors Dr. Fraser Smith, Susan Hannah and Dr. Daniel Richardson and published by Robert Rose, Inc. This book immediately peaked my interest because I have children with GI conditions. My oldest daughter was diagnosed with IBD(Crohns Disease) at the age of sixteen. She had complications which resulted in surgery. And, about a decade ago my fourth daughter began to have symptoms of  GERD at the age of eight-years-old. She has had relapses every four years since being diagnosed with it.

    ~ ~ ~
In the United States, approximately seven million people have some symptoms of GERD.

In this book, you will learn what is pH balance, how it is measured and how it can be restored. You will learn the ideal pH level for your body. You will learn about GI basics and therapies, lifestyle changes, medical therapies, complementary therapies and plans, balancing dietary fats, and food reactions. Chapter three begins by introducing you to the ph Balance Diet Program which features topics about food guides, food groups, balancing dietary fats, food reactions and how the diet works. Then it proceeds to the 28-day Meal Plan followed by 175 recipes for breakfast, snacks, lunch and dinner. This book will give you ample information that you need to follow an acid-alkaline balanced diet, and provides current information on common gastrointestinal conditions.

Restore your body’s acid-alkaline balance and enjoy better health and well-being.

At first, the book begins like a quick science lesson taking you back to high school, but it is made easy to understand and follow. I was introduced to many new things and was left with much to ponder about my own health and well-being. It is an awesome resource for future inquiries.

Did you know that the kind of water you drink can contribute to higher acidity in your body?

Back-to-School Doesn’t Need to be Back-To-Violence: 5 Must-Do Safety Tips in Architectural Design

5 Must-Do Safety Tips in Architectural Design:
By Brian P. Whitmore, AIA, LEED® AP
Vice President of Design at BCA Architects

    1.       Engage the Community – Nobody knows better the safety or security of a particular environment than that community. By engaging the stakeholders in conceptualization, a design team can learn a tremendous amount about what that community needs to protect itself, and what level of security is appropriate for its design. Additionally, by involving the community in the design effort, that design becomes more valuable to the community, hopefully raising the awareness to preserve that value long term.

    2.       Position Administration Front and Center – If a building or campus design houses an administration component, it’s important to locate that administration element adjacent to the primary entrance and with good visual access to that entrance. More than likely, an administrator will be occupying that space at all times so as to have eyes on the entrance.

    3.       Provide Door and Window Hardware with the ability to “Lock Down” – In an emergency, it’s important that occupants in a building have the ability to escape. On the other hand, the ability to protect occupants inside a building may also be a strategy for safety. Providing door and window hardware that has the ability to remain open, or be automatically or manually locked from the inside is of particular importance when a lock down scenario occurs.

    4.       Consider the overall placement of Security Systems – Nobody wants a building or campus to look like an institution, unless that is the intent of the design. Careful consideration of the placement of lighting, fencing, gates and camera systems can complement the architectural design and also maintain security. Buildings, other structures and landscape can provide good “barriers” to access and provide safety and refuge where necessary. They can also create blind spots and dark corners when not designed properly.

    5.       Develop an “inward focus” design – Access to natural light is critical to the design of educational, corporate and residential spaces, but can also weaken the line of defense. Consider the placement of glazing facing inward, or toward a safe environment. If glazing must be placed adjacent to the exterior or public way, consider locating it above reach, or with enough strength and the ability to be obscured in case of an unsafe situation.

    Article: Buying Her First Bra

4 Things to Look for When Buying Her 1st Bra
Expert Shares Tips for Parents and their Tweens

A girl’s first bra is a rite of passage for both her and her parents – and one that’s occurring at younger and younger ages. For some girls, it’s a turning point fraught with anxiety; for others, it’s a celebration. Either way, parents have a hard time ensuring their daughters to have good memories of shopping for and wearing their first bra.

“Trying on your first bra in a big discount retail store can be unnerving for an 8- or 9-year-old who may already feel shy about the experience,” says Kelly O’Brien, a lingerie specialist whose experience with young customers led her to launch LingerTween (Tween.ShopLinger.com), the first ecommerce site dedicated to undergarments for tweens.

“And those stores have limited selections, both in sizes and styles.”

The average Caucasian girl now enters puberty, which is marked by breast development, at 9.7 years old – about 4 months younger than just 17 years ago, according to an ongoing study as part of the Breast Cancer and the Environment Research Program. For black girls, the age is 8.8 years and the number of girls developing breasts in first grade has tripled since 1997

“Another choice is shops like Victoria’s Secret, a place most parents don’t feel comfortable taking their young daughters to shop,” O’Brien notes.

But there are options.  Once you’ve found a comfortable place to shop with a good selection of choices, O’Brien offers these tips for ensuring your daughter is comfortable and happy in her first bra.
    •  One size does not fit all. If your tween is average sized, bras labeled “one size fits all” may work. If you’re looking at bras with cup and band sizes, you’ll need to measure. For the band size, wrap the measuring tape around your daughter just under the breasts, where the band sits. Add 5 to that number, and that’s the size. (Tape says 23 inches, band will be 28 inches.) For cup size, measure around the fullest part of the chest and subtract that number from the band size. The difference is the cup size – 0 to 1 inch is an A; 2 inches is a B.

    •  Check the strap length. Straps are very important to consider for fit -- especially if your tween is petite. If the strap is a traditional adjustable strap, such as those on most women’s bras, be sure it can be shortened sufficiently. Elastic or stretchy straps are usually a safe bet.

    •  Consider a lined bra – it’s not about making her look more developed than she is! Generally speaking, tween padding is not meant to increase cup size. If a tween bra appears to have some padding, it’s typically a thin layer of foam used to smooth over the nipple area so nothing is visible under the shirt. It’s a modesty measure that also helps some girls feel less self-conscious.

    •  Camisoles and sports bras are popular options for shy girls who worry a bra will call attention to them. A short or full-length camisole provides a bit of coverage and isn't as noticeable under a blouse. For the same reason, some girls like to start with bras cut in a sporty style that don't feel like a traditional bra.

“In my shop, girls will come in with their mother and often their grandmother – buying that first bra is a big deal!” O’Brien says. “This is a rite of passage for everyone involved, and we can make it an experience that’s fondly remembered decades later.”

    About Kelly O’Brien

A former teacher, digital marketing executive, adjunct college professor, and part of the team that launched glossy.com, the first website for teen girls, O’Brien founded LingerTween, (Tween.ShopLinger.com), to address a glaring marketplace absence.

Debut Picture Book Written and Illustrated by Adriana Bowden

Imaginative picture book helps a precious little girl realize home is the very best place of all.

Many small children dream about living in castles or other exotic locales, especially when their own homes are small and simple. Sometimes, a gentle dose of reality is all it takes for them to regain perspective and cherish their own homes and families.
This is the case for the young girl in the newly published children’s picture book "Lillou’s Adventure – Little Trip Away" by author and illustrator Adriana Bowden.

This debut book introduces Lillou, a sweet young girl who has a very busy mother and father and a noisy little brother. They live in a small and charming house, but Lillou isn’t happy. This isn’t what she wants. Her home is too small, it’s too noisy, and she hates eating her vegetables!
Instead, Lillou dreams of living in the big house next door. Grand and spacious, it reminds her of a castle. One day, when she realizes her mom is preparing vegetables for dinner yet again, Lillou sneaks out to visit the home she has always dreamed of.

There, she meets a sweet old lady who listens to her dreams and invites her to stay upstairs in the vast and comfortable tower. It’s a dream come true, or is it?

Lillou soon discovers that as lovely as this castle appears, it isn’t very warm inside. It’s also a bit untidy, because the old lady has been ill and unable to clean it. Lillou consoles herself with the thought that at least she doesn’t have to eat any dinner, because the lady hasn’t cooked any.
Even Lillou’s new bedroom isn’t what she expected. It may be huge, but it’s also terribly quiet. Before long, Lillou realizes this isn’t what she wants after all. A bit embarrassed, she runs down the steps to find the old lady. Lillou apologizes, thanks the lady, and invites her to come to dinner, which she suddenly can’t wait to eat!

In her own cozy home once again, Lillou is so filled with gratitude that even the noise she once disliked sounds like music to her ears.

Bowden comments, "This book grew out of the stories my husband and I started making up to tell our children at bedtime. It has wonderfully colorful illustrations and a simple but interesting story that will peak your little one's imagination and bring the characters to life."
"I loved the pictures in the book, and the story was just wonderful for my three-year-old daughter. The pictures in the book are so nice that I would like to have them on the wall in my apartment…This book is really great to give as a gift." ~ Review by Bree L.

Author: Adriana Bowden is the mother of two children under the age of five who give her inspiration to create wonderful books for others to enjoy and the stepmother of two older children in high school and middle school. She works on her books in her spare time and never seems to run out of creativity, even when she is tired. She draws all of her characters by hand on a large surface and then puts them into the computer by taking a photo. It is a lot of work, but the result is a wonderful canvas of colors and imagination. She is a native of Brazil and is self-taught in the skills of drawing and illustrations.

    Melanie Wenzel

    1. Describe your book to us, what should readers expect?

It is so simple to produce natural remedies yourself and it makes so much fun. It is written and organized for all ages and stages of life. This book is an invaluable guide to the centuries-old traditions of herbal medicine.

The reader is taken by the hand, like a friend, and every step of home herbal remedies will be explained to them.

In a simple way, after a short preface and the history of the remedial plants, I lead the reader immediately to the recipes offering a comprehensive overview about the most important remedial plants with tips and tricks from my practice later on.

    1. When did your passion for homeopathy originate?

Naturopathy is a family tradition. This passion was passed on by my great-grandmother, then through my father, then to me. So, I never really had to ask myself what I would have liked to do later. For me, no other profession would have been a possibility. Nor would I want it to be.

    1. What did you enjoy most about writing your book?
Transmitting an ancient remedial knowledge to other people is a great feeling. I became aware of this during the typing of this response and I enjoyed this feeling more than anything.

    1. What were the biggest challenges you faced in writing the book?
The time management was a real challenge. Sometimes it was really difficult to find the time outside practice, family and children to write a book, but it was absolutely worthwhile.

    1. Tell us three things about yourself that would surprise your readers.

Although I spend a lot of time outdoors, also enjoying this very much, I am a town person. Even when everything centers around health in my professional life, sometimes I also afford timeouts, enjoying junk food like crisps and chips.

    1. Are you working on anything new now or in the near future?

Oh yes, my book “Slim with Herbs” has just come out. It is about how to lose weight effectively, using the slim potential of the nature beside.

    1. Where can your fans connect with you online?(Blog, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.)
