Thorden by Martin Allen is a beautifully written and  illustrated story about an ancient tree in the times when elves and trees frolicked side by side without the fear of danger until the disaster approached. Despite his past, he realizes that life is good. He has someone to care for and love and that is what matters the most. He is content.

Thorden is beautiful and the message is deep. I think the vocabulary will be over the heads of most younger children. I recommend it to be read aloud to a child and then offer discussion afterwards.

Allen comments, "Thorden conveys many messages. Among them, I hope readers will understand the importance of having someone to love and care for. I also hope they will appreciate how much courage it takes to go on in the face of great loss. This task is made easier when there is someone to love."
