What do "Goldilocks and the Three Bears," "The Three Billy Goats Gruff," and "The Three Little Pigs" have in common? Why, they are all folktales! Folktales are interesting stories that have been passed down from generation to generation based on customs, songs, sayings and stories. The tall tales share moral values and life lessons, often featuring supernatural elements followed by happy endings!

I was excited to receive my complimentary copy of the co-written book "Folklore and Food: Folktales that center on family, food, and down-home cooking," by authors Theresa Bane and Cynthia Moore Brown. I have enjoyed sharing it with my family. There are 17 amusing and entertaining folktales followed by two dozen home-style recipes. A few sampling stories that you may like are: "Bee Keeper," "Simple Jack," and "Nanny Goat and Her Two Kids."

You will find old and new recipe favorites from breads, cakes, cookies, puddings, pies and other staples. I think it is a delightful book to incorporate family bonding and fellowship with friends. You might want to gather-round the kitchen and whip up some fried green tomatoes, meatloaf, sweet potato biscuits and banana pudding. Afterwards, gather in the den to read folktales and have fun laughing and sharing memories of stories from your childhood. If you are not a fan of fried green tomatoes, there are other favorites to pick from (but, I really like fried green tomatoes.)

Some Featured Recipes:
  • Hummingbird Cake
  • Corn Pudding
  • Molasses Sugar Cookies
