Egg in a Basket Recipe

Egg in a Basket is a very simple recipe that would be great to teach your child or grandchild. It is interesting to know that it has many names like Bird's Nest Egg, Gashouse Eggs, Toad in a Hole, and Egg in a Hole.

  • Bread - Wheat or White
  • Butter - melted
  • Whole Large Egg
  • Cinnamon Sugar
  • Opt. Syrup

Cut a hole in the center your bread using a cookie cutter, small cup or glass. Melt a small pat of butter in a non-stick skillet on medium-high heat. Do not allow it to over heat or smoke. Lay the piece of bread into the skillet, gently crack open one egg and drop it into the hole you just made in the bread. If you want your egg completely cooked you simply poke the egg to break the yolk or allow it to remain hole. Use a non-stick spatula to turn it. Sprinkle cinnamon sugar, powered sugar or pancake/maple syrup to make your recipe complete. Try using different shaped cookie cutters for more fun in the kitchen with the kids! Oh, do not throw the center away! You can toast it in butter and add it to the top like a hat or lid. :) Enjoy!

Movie trivia: "Eggs in a Basket" has been featured in several classic and modern day movies like "Mary Jane's Pa", "Moon Struck" and "V for Vendetta". Recently, we saw it  from the TV series called "Crisis". What TV or movie have you seen this recipe presented?

And, I thought it would be fun to make with the kids. I hope you enjoy it too!
