Entertainment One Adds Two “Babar” Animated Series
to its Expanding North American Family Portfolio
eOne to begin releasing “Classic Babar” on DVD this Fall
“Babar and the Adventures of Badou” DVD release to follow in 2012
NEW YORK – AUGUST 5, 2011 – Leading independent distributor Entertainment One (eOne) has secured the home entertainment and digital rights to the classic animated series “Babar” as well as the new CG animated series “Babar and the Adventures of Badou,” airing on Disney Junior, from Nelvana. The addition of these beloved children’s properties further expands eOne’s growing U.S. portfolio of family programming.
Under the agreement with Nelvana, eOne obtains the U.S. and Canadian rights for 78 episodes of the classic series as well as three stand-alone features.
The original “Babar” TV series was broadcast in 30 languages in over 160 countries around the globe. Currently airing weekdays on Disney Junior, Disney Channel's programming block for kids 2-7 and their families, “Babar and the Adventures of Badou” is an updated version of the classic “Babar”, and introduces King Babar’s eight-year-old grandson, Badou, and his friends, including Chiku the monkey and Zawadi the zebra, all full of energy and ready for adventure as they explore the exotic world of Celesteville. The show is a Canada-France co-production from Nelvana Studio and TeamTO, in association with The Clifford Ross Company. “Babar and the Adventures of Badou” is also currently airing in Canada, the UK, Germany, Latin America, Australia, Scandinavia, Spain, Italy and Japan.
The “Babar” brand celebrates 80 years of global heritage in 2011, and its publishing legacy includes more than 12 million books in print. Entertainment One plans to release its first three “Classic Babar” DVD releases this fall, and bring “Babar and the Adventures of Badou” DVDs to market in 2012.
“As eOne continues to bolster our family programming in the U.S., we are thrilled to partner with Nelvana on these two heart-warming ‘Babar’ series,” said Michael E. Rosenberg, President of Entertainment One U.S. “A beloved property like ‘Babar’ is truly something special, and its universal appeal among parents and children across generations is unique.”
The addition of these television series is the latest boost to eOne’e expanding presence in family programming in the U.S. The company also releases family-focused feature films such as “The Secret of Moonacre” and “Ballet Shoes.” In February, eOne’s original pre-school series Peppa Pig made its U.S. debut on Nick Jr. “Peppa Pig” is broadcast in 180 countries and is now the leading UK pre-school brand.
The deal was negotiated by Sejin Park, VP of Worldwide Acquisitions for Entertainment One, and Bonnie MacVicar, Senior Manager, Home Entertainment and Digital Media for Nelvana Enterprises.

About The Clifford Ross Company
Founded in 1985 by artist/photographer Clifford Ross, The Clifford Ross Company focused on three classic properties during its early years: the works of Edward Gorey, Tom Swift and Babar. After optioning the rights to Babar in 1986 directly from Laurent de Brunhoff and the de Brunhoff family, CRC entered into a working relationship with Nelvana on all aspects of the property. For over 20 years, the companies have worked together producing both television and feature length movies featuring the Babar characters and developing a worldwide licensing program. Ross recently completed “Harmonium Mountain”, an animated, computer generated landscape video, with an original score by Philip Glass, which is an original selection of the Tribeca Film Festival.
