Sensible Portions - Portion Control that Makes Sense

Sensible Portions Veggie Crips

Sensible Portions
http://www.sensibleportions.com/

Several months ago while shopping at our local Sam's Club, my family and I stumbled across a yummy and healthy snack called Sensible Portions Veggie Snacks. Since my husband recently was diagnosed with diabetes, Sensible Portions has become a life saver for him. He can still eat a healthy snack and not fill empty or deprived. A serving size of the Veggie Straws is thirty-eight straws and only 130 calories. They go great with a sandwich or wrap. Try them between meals as a great pick-me-up.

You can even find more products like the Sensible Portions Potato Straws(Sweet Barbeque), Apple Straws and many more.

For more information, visit Sensible Portions at http://www.sensibleportions.com/ .

The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs!

ANIMALS WITH ATTITUDE STAR IN THIS NEW SCHOLASTIC STORYBOOK TREASURES™ DVD FEATURING JON SCIESZKA’S HILARIOUS TAKE ON EVERYONE’S FAVORITE PIG VS. WOLF TALE

THE TRUE STORY OF THE 3 LITTLE PIGS…AND MORE ANIMAL ADVENTURES

DVD SRP: $14.95

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Did the classic fable of the Three Little Pigs ever seem slightly biased to you?  All that huffing and puffing --- could one wolf really be all that unequivocally evil?  Finally, we get to hear the rest of the story, straight from the wolf’s mouth in THE TRUE STORY OF THE 3 LITTLE PIGS…AND MORE ANIMAL ADVENTURES!   As Alexander T. Wolf explains it, in Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith’s zany animated adaptation of the best-selling book, the whole Big Bad Wolf thing was just a big misunderstanding.  Get his wolfish perspective in the title tale which headlines this new SCHOLASTIC STORYBOOK TREASURES DVD featuring four other hilarious animal tales, providing more than an hour of family-friendly viewing.

The DVD includes the following stories:

·        The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs (adapted from the story by Jon Scieszka, illustrated by Lane Smith, narrated by Paul Giamatti). The classic story told from the wolf’s point-of-view! Was he really as bad as everyone thinks he was?

·        The Pig’s Wedding (adapted from the story written and illustrated by Helme Heine). All the pigs are too dirty and smelly for Porker and Curleytail’s wedding — until the hosts mix a few cans of paint with lots of imagination.

·        Wallace’s Lists (adapted from the story written by Barbara Bottner and Gerald Kruglik, illustrated by Olof Landstrom, narrated by Zach Braff). Wallace, a mouse, can do almost anything as long as he has a list. Then he meets a new neighbor and discovers a wondrous world that’s not on any of his lists!

·        Henry Builds a Cabin (adapted from the book by D.B. Johnson, narrated by James Naughton). A frugal bear named Henry sets about building a small cabin and ends up with a much bigger home than he and his friends could ever imagine!

·        This Is the House That Jack Built (adapted from the book by Simms Taback, narrated by Mandy Patinkin). It all started with the cheese that lay in the house that Jack built in this fun interpretation of an age-old classic.

BONUS FEATURES

·        Interviews with The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs author Jon Scieszka and illustrator Lane Smith.
·        Read Along captioning

My Thoughts

My children and I enjoyed watching "The True Story of The 3 Little Pigs! ... and more animal adventures" on DVD by Scholastic Storybook Treasures. Immediately my five-year-old pointed out that The True Story of The 3Little Pigs! by Jon Scieszka is not how the real story goes but she enjoyed it very much. What a wolf will do for a cup of sugar! As usual, we enjoy watching the interviews of the authors and illustrators at the end of the stories.

"The Pigs Wedding" by Helme Heine is a delightful tale about Porker and Curlytails wedding. When their friends arrive smelly and dirty she suggests they get cleaned up before the wedding begins. My youngest daughter could not wait for them to kiss.

"Wallace's Lists" by Barbara Bottner and Gerald Kruglik is about a mouse named Wallace that gets out of his comfort zone once he meets his new neighbor and soon to be best friend Albert.

"Henry Builds a Cabin" by D. B. Johnson is about a bear named Henry that goes about building a small home. His friends drop by and note that his home is too small but Henry does not see it that way.

And in conclusion, "This is the House That Jack Built" by Simms Taback is an all time favorite classic and my daughter's most favorite from all the stories on the disk.

Seventh GenerationTM

Seventh GenerationTM
Seventh GenerationTM

As a mom, you already do so much to protect your family- buckling seatbelts, cooking healthy meals and requiring bike helmets. But did you know that the laundry detergent you may be using could contain little-known chemicals called optical brighteners?

According to scientific research, these can cause allergic reactions, are toxic to small fish and other aquatic life, and can pollute your waterways.
When ultraviolet light hits optical brighteners coating your clothing, the brighteners convert UV rays into visible light to create an optical illusion. This tricks the eye into thinking the clothing is whiter and brighter, and therefore cleaner than it really is.

So how can you avoid these optical brighteners? Seventh Generation makes it easy because their laundry detergents are not only free of optical brighteners, but they´re also non-toxic . In addition, because Seventh Generation liquid laundry detergents are both hypo-allergenic and biodegradable, you can rest easy knowing you made a considerate choice for your family and the environment. We invite you to take part in this Spark and conduct your own experiment to see the difference between your current laundry detergent and Seventh Generation laundry detergent.

When washed in a conventional laundry detergent that contains optical brighteners, clothes appear to glow under a black light. When you use Seventh Generation liquid laundry products, you won´t see the same glow on your clothing.

Take a look at our experiment in the photo below. We took two identical organic cotton shirts and washed one in a conventional laundry detergent that contains optical brighteners and the other in Seventh Generation laundry detergent which does not use optical brighteners; we think you´ll see similar results!

Conventional Laundry Detergent vs/Seventh Generation Laundry Detergent

I would like to encourage you to drop by their site and see what they have to offer.

Connecting for a Cure - Pink Together

Recognizing the tremendous impact breast cancer continues to have on millions of lives, General Mills created Pink Together. Now in its fourth year, Pink Together is a campaign that aims to raise greater awareness of the disease and to help those touched by breast cancer find strength together.

Individually we are strong, but together we are stronger. We encourage you to visit PinkTogether.com, an ever-growing community of hope of more than 680,000 breast cancer survivors and supporters. There you can share stories, post comments of encouragement and send virtual flowers to let someone know you are thinking of him or her.

On this site, you can also read the empowering stories from the 2010 Pink Together Survivor Ambassadors, five incredible individuals whose courage in the face of breast cancer serves as a source of inspiration:

  • Ebony Steele - This three-year survivor serves as a National Ambassador for Susan G. Komen for the Cure´s® Circle of Promise, an effort focused on fostering breast cancer awareness, support, empowerment and action among African American women.
  • Eli Arroyo-Allen - A two-year survivor, Eli is the founder of the Loving Life/Amando La Vida program supporting Latina women with breast cancer.
  • Ginger Johnson - A mother and four-year survivor, Ginger is the director of Happy Chemo!, whose mission is to bring happiness to those dealing with the negative effects of chemotherapy and cancer.
  • Libby Pomroy - Libby is a two-time, 15-year survivor and a General Mills employee.
  • Nicole Vazquez - This three-year survivor is a Komen breast cancer activist in the Latino community.

These Survivor Ambassadors and their empowering stories will also be featured on the Pink Together Facebook fan page and YouTube channel, and on special pink packaging on your favorite General Mills´ brands like Cheerios® Cereal, Green Giant® Frozen Vegetables and Nature Valley® Granola Bars. If you or someone you know would make a great candidate for next year´s Pink Together Survivor Ambassadors, please visit PinkTogether.com for more information.

To encourage personal connections in the online community, General Mills will donate $1 (up to $20,000) to Komen for each inspirational story submitted, encouraging comment posted, or virtual flower of support sent on PinkTogether.com, and for each shared message of hope posted on Pink Together´s Facebook fan page during the month of October (up to $5,000). This $25,000 is in addition to the $2 million donation General Mills has committed to Komen to advance breast cancer research and support education and community outreach projects.

Connecting for a Cure Gift Pack

Loving Heart Designs was provided with a "Connecting for a Cure" gift pack that includes a Pink Ribbon car magnet and key chain, travel mug, and drawstring backpack, along with coupons for free packages of one Big G cereal, Green Giant® Frozen Veggies, Macaroni Grill® Dinner Kits, Fiber One® Bars and Progresso® Soup.

 ---

My sister-in-law is a breast cancer survivor. She is celebrating her fifth year of surviving. She still has much to deal with but overall she is doing fine. I believe she would like all women to remember to do a monthly check-up at home and if they feel something no matter how small is maybe, make an appointment to see your family doctor immediately. My sister-in-law did not go do this right away and it hurt her.  We are happy she is sharing her story with others now.

---

Contest Time:
As a special gesture one of our readers will win an additional gift pack with all the items listed above(coupons instead of actual products). All of the items included in the gift packs are from ShopKomen.com, where 25 percent of the merchandise purchase price benefits Komen.

Congratulations to Katrina! She won the Pink Together Giveaway.

This Connecting for a Cure contest will run from October 12th to October 30, 2010 at 11:00 AM EST. The winner will be contacted by email and have 48hrs to respond with their information. MyBlogSpark will be responsible for shipping the prize to the winner. Thank you.

My Thoughts

My children and I are fans of the Treasury of 100 Storybook Classics Volume 2. Among the seventeen DVDs, one of our favorites is the Hans Christian Andersen Collection. We enjoy watching and hearing The Ugly Duckling, Nightingale, The Little Match Girl and others over and over again. Another favorite is The James Marshall Fairytale Collection with Red Riding Hood, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Hansel and Gretel and more. I am sure you will find many favorites to watch over and over again with your child or grandchild.

Added bonuses include the wonderful read-along option for each story. Each DVD contains follow-up questions, reviews with authors and illustrators. There are nearly twenty hours of fun and educational entertainment for your child to participate in. We would like to applaud each illustrator for the wonderful artwork and the narrators for doing a superb job in telling each story.

My Thoughts

My family and I received the  Rosewood Plum, Cranberry Pear and Anjou Pear Spice Candles to sample from the newest Febreze home Collection of Wood Wick Candles. We all took a vote and we like them all with a preference for the Cranberry Pear. Since our weather has turned cooler it has put us in the mood for the upcoming holidays and this scent with it's amazing crackling sound does the trick. My husband stole away with one of them to his office to enjoy the fragrant scent while he worked. We can not wait to try all the scents. I think we will consider purchasing the Gingersnap Vanilla, Orange Honeycomb and Green Tea next. Gingersnap Vanilla should be a hit for the Christmas holiday season.  We are amazed that these candles will last up to 80 hours. We hope you will consider trying one of the nine new Wooden Wick  Candles in your home too.

Justin Roberts' TRICK or TREAT Family Concert

Justin Roberts’ Trick or Treat Family Concert Tour
"Everyone's outside, bags are open wide,
Cuz we're ready to trick-or-trick-or-trick-or-trick-or treat!
Falling leaves will soar, we'll go door to door,
Cuz we're ready to trick-or-trick-or-trick-or-trick-or TREAT!"
-Justin Roberts, from the song "Trick or Treat"

On October 31st, kids all around the nation will be running around their neighborhoods and filling their bags with candy. It's Halloween! And we have the perfect soundtrack for the holiday. Justin Roberts' new song, "Trick or Treat" (listen now: http://www.justinrobertsmusic.com/trickortreat.php) is a special treat that we want to throw into your bag of sweets.

Justin and the Not Ready for Naptime Players will visit several cities for their “Trick or Treat” family concert tour during October:

·        Saturday, October 2 – Riverside Arts Market, Jacksonville, FL
·        Sunday, October 3 – Eddie’s Attic, Decatur, GA
·        Saturday, October 9 – Wealthy Theatre, Grand Rapids, MI
·        Sunday, October 10 – The Ark, Ann Arbor, MI
·        Saturday, October 23 – World Café Live, Philadelphia
·        Sunday, October 24 – The Jewish Museum, New York City
·        Saturday, October 30 – National Geographic Live, Washington, DC
·        Sunday, October 31 – Space, Evanston, IL

here: http://www.justinrobertsmusic.com/tour.php

The song is from Justin Roberts' new CD Jungle Gym, which has earned him a place in the pantheon of top family music stars, and has gained lots of media attention (NPR, The New York Times, Time Magazine, NoDepression, just to name a few) and thousands of new fans in recent months. The songs on Jungle Gym strike the deepest chords with parents, grandparents and kids alike because they evoke iconic moments that we all remember from our own childhoods. Moments like a the bewilderment of getting your first haircut, anticipating the fun and homesickness of sleepovers, or playing with the gym class parachute, all come to vivid life in these songs. The song "Trick or Treat" is no exception.  National Public Radio's All Things Considered reviewer calls this song "an instant Halloween classic,"  and even during the dog days of summer, it was getting attention. Dad blogger "Out with the Kids" calls the song brilliant: "There are so many remarkable moments contained inside this 220-second gem … I can almost see the fist pumps from the crowd.”
We invite you to take a listen to the song, and to view Justin and his Not Ready for Naptime Players and their high energy performance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nu6JUM8Ut9I&feature=related .

Knifty Knitter Looms

Knifty Knitter Round Looms
Knifty Knitter Looms

Recently, my husband bought us the Knifty Knitter Round Looms and a Specialty Loom set from Walmart. He thought the girls and I would spend less time on the computer if we began crafting. I usually like to include crafts in our homeschool program but my teenagers seem to enjoy writing stories and drawing more. After a few weeks, I decided someone needed to begin making a hat or two. I started out with the smalled loom(blue) for infants. The next hat I created was for my five-year-old daughter, Summer. I told her it was not finished because I want to create a pom pom for the top. I plan to show a few of the things we make on the blog. I look forward to trying my hand as making a baby blanket, scarf and many other things.

I have found that Youtube is very helpful in locating videos that others have created using Knifty Knitter products. You can find tutorials on Youtube for making pom pom balls too.

You can find Knifty Knitter products at local craft and retail stores. You may find a great bargain online too.
